Paul Motian (1931–2011) war ein grosser Jazz- schlagzeuger, originell und eigensinnig. Seine Auf- nahmen mit Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, George Russell u. a. sind eiserner Bestand jeder Jazzdiskothek. Wie als Drummer, gehört er auch als Komponist zur bedrohten Art der «pro specie rara». Russ Lossing, während 12 Jahren Motians bevorzugter Pianopartner, ist wie kein anderer be- rufen, Motians anregend unkonventionelles kom- positorisches Schaffen auszuloten. In «Drum Mu- sic» verankert er in einem verblüffenden Solo- rezital 10 Motian-Kompositionen auf improvisato- risch bestechende Art zwischen aktuellem Jazz und zeitgenössisch tonaler Konzertmusik. Pianist Russ Lossing's touching tribute to his mentor Paul Motian

Paul Motian (1931-2011) was a great jazzdrummer,  inventive and always with a will of his own. His recordings with Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, George Russell and many more are base stock in every jazz lover's collection. However Motian belonged into the category of "endangered species" in both classes of drummers and that of composers. For twelve years Russ Lossing was Motian's preferred pianopartner. And thus Lossing is the expert like no one else to explore in depth the unconventional and inspiring genius of Motian the composer. "Drum Music" is a stunning improvisational solorecital, a convincing plunge into 10 Motian compositions. This is music in between contemporary jazz and up to date tonal concertmusic. (JS)
